In February 2005, Robbins founded Robbins Financial Group to provide financial planning and advisory services through an independent firm structure. By that point, he had already achieved top advisor recognition at two major life insurance companies¹. The experience helped reinforce two ideas that became central to the firm’s philosophy.
First, Robbins believed an advisor should not be pulled between competing interests. In his view, the practice should be focused on the client and the client’s financial goals. Second, he believed that financial institutions responsible for client assets should be built around long-term stability rather than short-term results. These ideas became more than guiding statements. They became standards for evaluating the firm’s decisions, relationships, and future growth.
Building a Stronger Advisory Platform
A major transition took place in March 2015, when Robbins moved the practice to MML Investors Services, LLC, a corporate registered investment platform. The decision came after several years of due diligence. It reflected his belief that the underlying platform supporting a financial practice is just as important as the advice delivered to clients.
At the time of the transition, Robbins asked 321 client households to move their business to the new platform. Every household agreed to follow him. That level of client continuity reinforced the importance he placed on trust, personal relationships, and an advice-driven approach tailored to each client’s financial circumstances, priorities, and long-term objectives.
Since that move, Robbins Financial Group has grown more than fivefold. The firm also expanded its team with experienced professionals, including Director of Operations Bridget McDonald, partner and advisor Adam Taff, licensed advisor Edward “Ned” Jordan, and senior consultant Dan Balogh. In 2023, the firm broadened its capabilities further through the acquisition of Executive Benefits International, strengthening its expertise in executive benefits and expanding the range of planning solutions available to clients.
Integrated Financial Planning Approach
Over 26 years in practice, Robbins has worked with a broad range of clients, including athletic directors, professional athletes, entrepreneurs, executives, physicians, families, and business owners. Many of these clients have complex financial situations that require several areas of planning to work together.
His primary areas of focus include wealth management, trust and estate planning, executive deferred compensation strategies, tax mitigation strategies, retirement income planning, and business succession planning. Robbins views these areas as closely connected rather than as separate services. A retirement decision, for example, may affect taxes, estate planning, investment management, or business ownership. His approach is therefore centered on understanding how each part of a client’s financial life connects to the larger picture.
That coordinated perspective also shapes how Robbins Financial Group works with outside professionals. The firm operates as a single-resource planning practice and collaborates with a carefully selected network of attorneys, accountants, and specialists. Rather than requiring clients to manage communication between multiple professionals on their own, Robbins and his team help coordinate those relationships and keep the various parts of the financial strategy aligned.
Long-Term Client Relationships
For Robbins, the success of Robbins Financial Group is not measured only by growth. He places significant value on the quality and longevity of the relationships the firm has built with its clients. Many of the families, professionals, and business owners he serves have remained with him through platform changes, market cycles, and the practice’s continued expansion.
That loyalty reflects the principles Robbins has followed since the beginning of his career. His focus remains on understanding each client’s priorities, developing coordinated financial strategies, and building relationships that are intended to last over time. More than two decades after entering the industry, Donald P. Robbins continues to lead Robbins Financial Group with the same core approach: put the client first, plan for the long term, and maintain a practice centered on independent guidance.
